Issue 7: Beneath the Surface -- SUBMISSIONS APRIL 30, 2015 to JUNE 30, 2015

There's always something brewing just below the surface. Something we can't always see, but that we can feel, smell, sense, or remember. This seventh issue is all about bringing that "stuff" out into the open.

We want you to think of secrets, memories, complex conversations packed down tightly for centuries -- it's time to bring them all into the light. What's just within our reach but we dare disturb it? Sounding scary? It doesn't have to be. Maybe there are wonderful and amazing stories you want to share but haven't. Maybe what lies beneath the surface is the answer to some pressing, life changing, question we've been asking for generations.

Send us your poems, stories, and art selections that tell the stories of what lies beneath the surface just out of reach Make us rethink how what we keep hidden can shape and mold the generations coming up behind us. Send us ideas and images that speak to the multiple ways to interpret the theme "beneath the surface".  We can't wait to see how your ideas and images manifest!!!

As usual, we want work that uses language in fresh ways and images that speak to the importance of uncovering what's beneath the surface. Yes!! We like to read about secrets and the untold story, but we also want to know how to use these stories to live bigger and bolder above the surface. How can you take the idea of something lying just out of reach and turned it on its head? These are the stories we want to hear.

Issue 5: Exploration & Discovery - SUBMISSION PERIOD CLOSED

Thank you to all of who you submitted and were ever so patient with us. We can't wait to share the amazing stories, poems, and art that will grace the pages of our fifth issue. In the meantime, make sure you are following the blog and that you are subscribed to the Generations Literary Podcast.

Issue 4: Rites of Passage -- SUBMISSION PERIOD CLOSED

We publish poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction and art from writers and artists – AGES 13 & up. Join the conversation!

In issue four, we hope to explore the many ways in which a rite
of passage shows up in modern society, and how it brings with it, a story from the past. The celebration of milestones, movement, and progress will be the focus of this edition. Whether it’s a ritual based on coming of age, or a ceremonial event, we want to discuss and discover.

We want to know how you keep tradition, or how you disrupt and redefine it.

Send us your poems, stories, and art selections that dig deep into the rituals, the ceremonies, the traditions, and the moments that demonstrate or define your culture, your family, and your generation. Send us ideas and images that break tradition, go against rituals, and redefine your generation. We want it all!

We want work that uses language in fresh ways and images that speak to the importance of forward movement and the passage
of time. Yes! Think of learning to ride a bike, getting your driver’s license, graduations, baptisms, weddings, fraternities, sororities,
Bat Mitzvahs, Quinceañeras, Sweet Sixteens, becoming a parent,
a grandparent, turning 21, 40, 65, 100. Think of pilgrimages, spirit walks, vision quests, births, funerals, firsts, lasts, and all the living that happens in between. These are the stories that we want to hear.

Issue 3: Global Citizenship -- SUBMISSION PERIOD CLOSED

It is always the right time to sit together and have discussions about the world, to pull aside your peers, your predecessors, and your successors and ask questions about what they think their role is in this global community.

From environmental issues to issues of war and economics, we want to know how you view your role as a global citizen. What is your responsibility? What are you doing to ignite change and promote awareness? How does the idea of a global community challenge your generation’s thinking about citizenship?

We are interested in fresh language and imagery that speaks about world issues and views from the middle of neighborhoods around the world. While our view of a global community includes race, politics, and religion, it also extends beyond these topics. For example, conversations about education, gender, social justice, world travel, language and the environment can and should be explored. However, we also believe that many of you are pioneers of thought and we welcome your additions to this less-than-exhaustive list. Send us work that speaks from the past, in the present, or to the future without preaching or brow-beating. We welcome varied views but frown upon racial slurs, hate messages, or any disparaging and slanderous rhetoric.

Issue 2: Influences -- SUBMISSION PERIOD CLOSED

In this issue, we will explore what influences us. From role models to music to money, what influences your life? Your decisions? How have you been influenced by others? Are most of your influences from the generations before yours or from your peers? What influences have you had on others?

Your ideas and images can represent your neighborhood or the globe. You can share what is private or public, individual or universal. We want to see & read how you interpret the theme INFLUENCES.

Issue 1: Expectations -- SUBMISSION PERIOD CLOSED

We seek to publish poetry, short fiction, personal narratives and art that speak to the subject of EXPECTATIONS. We want to hear from all ages on the kinds of expectations you have for yourself, for others, for the world. We want to know how your expectations or lack of expectations factors into who you are or who you are becoming. What do you expect of the generation ahead of you, behind you, around you?
